Flexion Distraction Technique involves a special table that distracts and flexes the back in a gentle motion to allow the spine to move correctly so that pressure is taken off an injury. This therapy is commonly used to manage the symptoms of lumbar disc injuries, sciatica and various other low back complaints with great success. The chiropractor will apply gentle pressure to specific areas to encourage proper movement of the spinal joints, stretch back muscles, relieve pressure and pain, and restore motion to the spine.

The flexion motion of the table allows compressed disc spaces to increase, which reduces the pressure on the spinal nerves that may be injured from a bulging or herniated disc. This technique encourages movement of the spinal joints, allowing your body to produce more lubricating joint fluid between the disc spaces, which improves spinal function, increases range of motion and reduces pain.

Spine related conditions that may benefit from Flexion Distraction may include:

  • Disc herniation

  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

  • Post low back surgery pain

  • Pregnancy related back pain

  • Leg pain

  • Sciatica

  • Promote good disc health

  • Relieve pain and numbness in the back, buttocks, arms, and legs

  • Reduce pressure on your spinal nerves and discs

  • Decrease bulging of herniated discs

  • Lumbar Disc Herniation

  • Sprains/ Strains

  • Muscle spasms

  • Radiculopathy

  • Eliminate or delay the need for surgery in some cases

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Acute or chronic knee pain

  • Facet Syndrome

  • Improve range of motion and mobility

  • Help you manage chronic back pain

  • Relieve stiffness

  • Decrease neck pain and headaches

Flexion Distraction Therapy is a safe, nonsurgical, gentle and effective treatment for disc injuries, low back, and leg pain symptoms. It may also reduce pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and improve spinal movement in patients who have scoliosis. The technique is also gentle enough to use after spinal surgery and if you have osteoporosis. Chiropractors have had great success using flexion distraction therapy on many patients, saving them from further medical intervention such as surgery and/or injections.
